Media: S.O.U.P. Website Mock Up
S.O.U.P. (Society of Undergraduate Physicists) ‘s club website.
I realise that perhaps I should have perhaps but it under a QUT link/style. But since it is a mock up, it was just to get an idea.
This is the about section of the website, which is used to introduce Dr. Joseph Snow. And to link players to find the next step and encourage them to learn more of Joseph’s history.

Inspiration: A deep sea bioluminescencent Jellyfish.
The bright light on this jellyfish is created by a chemical reaction within the organism. In most cases it requires two chemicals “Luciferin” and “Luciferase” mixed with O2 (oxygen) to generate light.
This a is a natural and organic way to produce light. The light is commonly a blueish/greenish light, found in cave glow worms. Similar to the colour of the “energy” in Atlantis the lost empire.
I picked this to be more of a plausible energy source. And while I can’t seen to find much research into scientists trying to widen the scope of this chemical reaction. I believe it could be done.
Image Comments: Incredible colour, not like the common blue/green light that is usually found in bioluminescencent organisms. (like the glowworm)

Atlantis: The lost Empire
My biggest inspiration for the idea behind my ARG.
This Disney interpretation of Atlantis is about a young man named Milo and his quest to find the lost city of Atlantis. With miraculous chance of funding due to his grandfathers connections, Milo and a team of strange explorers venture down into the depths of the ocean to find the city. Using a journal that was created centuries ago, the navigate their way through underground tunnels.
They discover Atlantis, and discover it is still inhabited with it’s peoples.
The movie goes on to have plot twists and turns and moral decision moments, like every other Disney film. But the focus of story plot was of the island’s energy source. (Which had me so happy I was jiggling in my seat while the movie was still playing)
In the film, it was called the Heart of Atlantis, and turned out out be what saved the city when it was hit by the tsunami wave. The glowing blue light was portrayed to be fueled by the citizens of Atlantis. Now realistically, that wouldn’t be very plausable, but I very much wanted to use the idea of a energy source in my ARG.
What I took from this film:
Journal Idea - Holding all the secrets of Atlantis.
A Energy Source - Utilized by the people of Atlantis.

Media Inspiration: Inspirational images
This narrative, to me, didn’t seem like such a technology based ARG. It feels like this because of all the old history, mystery and treasure hunt nature of the game. Journals, keys, boxes, library books. Etc.
There would be a limited amount of technology based media, eg. websites, mobile phones, emails, social networks etc.
These images express what media elements I want to use.

Inspiration: Lost City of Atlantis
“Atlantis there existed a confederation of kings, of great and marvelous power, which held sway over all the island, and over many other islands also and parts of the continent.” Timaeus 24e–25a, R. G. By translation (Loeb Classical Library).
When given the theme of “A better world”, I did some thinking into what I would consider a better/good/Utopian world.
A lot of my answers had to do with world peace, world respect, worldwide equality, a renewable and sustainable energy resource. A happy world.
All seemed very generic and boring, and I didn’t feel at anyway inspired,
so I took a new angle.
I am a huge fan of myth, especially of Greek mythology. I sort of remembered the story of Atlantis, a great empire fallen into the depths of the sea. After a little research, I discovered that even though it was said to be such a great empire, it was so corrupt that the mighty God Poseidon was forced to sink the city.
Kind of the opposite of what I was hoping for, but A little more research lead me to Disney’s interpretation of Atlantis. (Which was such a relief because Disney is all about morals and Happily ever after stories! - Off to the video store!)

A Better World: Utopia
An imagined place or state of things in which everything is perfect. The word was first used in the book Utopia (1516) by Sir Thomas More
